Pictured above is the fish that holds the world's record for largest freshwater fish, a whopping 646 pounds. Specifically, it's a Mekong giant catfish. Giant fish researchers - led by Zeb Hogan of the WWF and University of Wisconson - tried to save it so it could spawn yet again, but it died and was consumed by hungry villagers. The National Geographic has a bio of young Zeb, who's dedicated his life to the study of fishosaurs, particularly in Southeast Asia.
If you're a PETA member or have a sensitive constitution, you probably will not want to see this picture showing our friend above after the villagers got a hold of him.
In line with the last link, while some people might think such a large, old fish would be subpar, this page tells us that food writer Alan Davidson is quite effusive over the giant beast:
"superlative... admirable texture and unmatched flavour... subtle and majestic..."
Unbelivable what a ripper
