Squidzilla! Diver approaches giant squid in Japan

On Christmas Eve 2016, a giant squid - estimated to be 12.1' long - surfaced in Toyama Bay in Japan. It appeared to be healthy but just lost, and a brave diver helped guide it back to deeper water.

The diver, Akinobu Kimura, told CNN "[m]y curiosity was way bigger than fear, so I jumped into the water and go close to it". In a playful gesture, the giant squid - quite possibly a juvenile - tried to get Akinobu to join him under the sea. Says he: "[t]his squid was not damaged and looked lively, spurting ink and trying to entangle his tentacles around me. I guided the squid toward to the ocean, several hundred meters from the area it was found in, and it disappeared into the deep sea."
